What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort familiar objects by one observable property at a time. They use sight, touch, a hand lens, a ruler, or a balance to compare objects and explain their sorting rule.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can group mixed objects by color, size, shape, weight, or texture and name the chosen property. The student can sort the same objects a different way and use a tool when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort by an object's use or by what they like instead of a physical property. They may confuse size with weight or assume a larger object is always heavier. Some think objects can belong in only one group.
How to Assess It
- Give each student six buttons and fabric swatches. Say, “Sort these by one physical property, name your rule, then show another way to sort them.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs buttons, fabric swatches, sorting trays, hand lenses, rulers, and balances to make and label groups by texture, size, or weight.
Show two classroom objects and ask, “How are they alike and different in color, shape, size, weight, and texture?”
Play Mystery Sort by having one student silently group object cards while classmates identify the sorting rule and check each item.
Set up a laundry basket with clean socks and towels for students to sort by color, size, and texture, then explain each group.
