What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe objects and ask questions about traits such as color, shape, texture, hardness, and flexibility. They sort objects by shared traits and explain their sorting rule.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks useful questions that can be answered through observation or touch. The student sorts the same objects in more than one way and names the property used each time.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort by an object's use, such as toys versus tools, instead of a physical property. They may also confuse material with color or assume objects can belong to only one group.
How to Assess It
- Give students four classroom objects and ask, “How could you sort these objects in two different ways?” Have them label each group with the property used.

Ways to Teach It
Place buttons, blocks, fabric, and foil in trays for students to observe, question, and sort by two different physical properties.
Ask students to write, “Which property best helps you identify a mystery object, and why?”
Play Property Sort Relay, where teams draw a property card and quickly group object pictures that match it.
Examine items in a recycling bin and sort them by material, texture, flexibility, or another observable property.
