What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions about what familiar objects are made from. They sort objects by material and explain how items in each group are alike or different.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify materials such as wood, metal, cloth, paper, clay, and plastic. The student can group objects by material and ask a useful comparison question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort by color, shape, or use instead of material. They may name the object rather than its material, or think an object can contain only one material.
How to Assess It
- Give each student four classroom objects and ask, “Which two are made from the same material, and how do you know?”

Give pairs a tray of wood, metal, cloth, paper, clay, and plastic items to examine, question, and sort.
Show a metal spoon and plastic spoon, then ask, “How are their materials the same and different?”
Play Material Mystery by hiding an object in a bag while students ask questions about its texture, hardness, and flexibility.
Inspect lunch containers and sort each item by material, including objects made from more than one material.
