What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students describe and compare objects by color, shape, texture, size, hardness, flexibility, and absorbency. They sort objects using observable properties. They explain how pieces can be rearranged and how heating or cooling can cause reversible or irreversible changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can classify the same objects in more than one accurate way and explain each sorting rule. They can show that rearranged pieces remain the same matter. They use observations to explain why melting ice is reversible but cooking an egg is not.

Common Misconceptions

Students may sort objects by their use instead of an observable property, or assume all solids are hard. They may think rearranged pieces become new matter. They often assume every change caused by heating or cooling can be reversed.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Describe two properties of a paper clip, then explain whether melted ice can become solid again and give evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up trays with foil, sponge, wax paper, and craft sticks; students test flexibility, texture, and absorbency, then sort by evidence.

  2. Ask students to write: What changed and what stayed the same when ten linking cubes were rearranged? Use two observations.

  3. Play Property Sort: teams draw an object card, name one observable property, and place it under a matching category label.

  4. Compare an ice cube melting with an egg cooking, then have students explain which kitchen change can be reversed and why.
