What Students Need to Do

Students examine changes and decide whether the original substance remains or a new substance forms. They use observations and reliable information to explain and share their reasoning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify examples such as melting, cutting, rusting, and burning. They support each choice with evidence, including gas production, a new solid, or lasting changes in properties.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every color, shape, or temperature change means a chemical reaction. They often classify dissolving and changes of state as chemical changes. They may also assume every irreversible change is chemical.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: An ice cube melts while steel wool develops reddish-brown rust. Label each change and justify each answer with evidence about whether a new substance formed.

   Have groups compare melting ice with mixing baking soda and vinegar, recording properties before and after and evidence of new substances.
