The Standard
Provide evidence from observations to construct an explanation that some changes in matter caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some changes are irreversible.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe materials before and after heating or cooling. They use those observations to explain whether each material can return to its earlier form.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain that melted ice can freeze again, while a cooked egg cannot become raw again. They support each claim with a specific observed change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think cooling always undoes heating or that melted matter has disappeared. They may also confuse a change in shape with a permanent change caused by heating.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Ice melts, juice freezes, and an egg cooks. Circle the change that cannot be reversed, then write one observation supporting your choice.
