What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose one change, such as drought, pollution, or the loss of a species. They show how that change affects organisms, resources, and relationships across an ecosystem.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can create a clear cause and effect chain with at least two connected impacts. The student supports each impact using food, water, shelter, or population needs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a change affects only one organism or that every population changes in the same way. They may skip intermediate links or make claims without using feeding and habitat needs as evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A pond loses half its water during a drought. Draw and explain a chain showing how this could affect two organisms.

Ways to Teach It
Build a yarn food web with organism cards, remove one species, and have students trace three likely effects through the web.
Write about a pond after a month without rain, naming what changes first and how two organisms respond.
Play Change Chain: teams draw an event card, then earn points for linking three supported ecosystem effects.
Study a local park after heavy rain, then map how standing water could affect plants, insects, birds, and people.
