What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what a specific plant or animal needs to live and grow. They draw, build, or describe a setup that provides every need.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a workable design and label where the organism gets water, air, food or light, shelter, and space. They explain how each part helps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think plants get food from soil or need only water. They may leave air or space out of an animal habitat. They may also assume every organism needs the same shelter or amount of light.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of a rabbit and ask them to draw a safe home with all its needs. Have them label each need.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a seedling, cup, soil, craft sticks, and paper, then have them build and label a setup meeting its needs.
Ask students to draw an animal home and write one sentence explaining how it provides food, water, air, shelter, and space.
Play Need or Nice by sorting picture cards into items an organism needs to survive and items it could live without.
Inspect a classroom plant, identify any unmet need, and create a one-week care schedule to address it.
