What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe pictures or real items and sort them using traits such as growth, movement, and the need for food or water. They explain why each item belongs in its group.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly sorts familiar examples, including a plant, animal, fallen leaf, and rock. The student names evidence for each choice and can revise a group when given new information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call anything that moves living, so cars and clouds get misclassified. They may say plants are not living because plants do not walk or talk. They may group a dead insect with rocks, missing that it was once alive.

How to Assess It

Give each student four picture cards: puppy, tree, dead leaf, and toy car. Ask them to sort the cards and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Let pairs sort classroom objects and nature samples into living, once living, and never living hoops, then attach one evidence label.

  2. Ask, "Is a seed alive?" Have students draw a claim and dictate one observation or fact that supports it.

  3. Play Mystery Sort: reveal picture cards one at a time, and students hold up group cards before explaining one choice.

  4. Walk around the schoolyard to classify a tree, bird, fallen leaf, bench, and puddle, photographing evidence for a class chart.
