Elements in This Standard
S5L1 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.

- S5L1.b
Develop a model that illustrates how plants are sorted into groups (seed producers, non-seed producers) using data from multiple sources.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort animals by backbone and vertebrate group. They sort plants by vascular tissue, spores or seeds, and flowers or cones, then explain the evidence used.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place an unfamiliar organism in the correct group using observable traits. They can build or read a branching chart and justify each choice with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may group organisms by habitat, size, or color instead of shared structures. They may call whales fish, bats birds, or assume every plant with seeds has flowers.
How to Assess It
- Give students six organism cards and a blank branching chart. Ask them to classify each organism and write one trait that supports every placement.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs organism cards, hand lenses, and a branching mat to sort animals and plants by shared structures.
Use the prompt, “Should a whale be grouped with fish or mammals?” and require two pieces of trait evidence.
Play Classification Relay, where teams place organism cards under labeled groups and correct one another using a reference chart.
Have students classify plants and animals found around the school, then explain which visible traits helped and which required research.
