Elements in This Standard
SKL2 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.
- SKL2.a
Construct an argument supported by evidence for how animals can be grouped according to their features.
- SKL2.b
Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants can be grouped according to their features.
- SKL2.c

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe plants and animals, then sort them into groups using visible features. They describe how members of two groups are alike and different using drawings, words, or speech.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can group organisms by a stated feature, such as body covering, number of legs, or plant parts. The student can name one similarity and one difference between groups and point to evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think plants are not living because they do not walk. They may group organisms by color alone or assume every member of a group looks exactly the same.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of two birds and two insects. Ask students to circle each group, then draw or tell one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It
Let students sort plastic animals and plant picture cards, then explain the feature used for each group.
Ask, "How are a fish and a bird alike, and how are they different?" Record answers with simple drawings.
Play Mystery Group by giving clues about legs, coverings, or plant parts while students hold up matching organism cards.
Walk around the schoolyard, tally plants and animals, then compare the features seen in each group.
