What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe young organisms, their parents, and other members of the same kind. They ask questions and describe features that are alike or different, such as color, size, shape, and markings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare a parent and its young using visible evidence. The student can also compare two young organisms of the same kind and ask a relevant question about their traits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every young organism is an exact, smaller copy of its parent. They may treat size as the only difference or compare two different species. They may also mistake clothing, dirt, or injuries for inherited traits.
How to Assess It
- Show one adult cat and two kittens. Ask each student to name one shared trait, one difference, and one question they have about the cats.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs photo cards of adult and young dogs to match, then have students circle one shared trait and one different trait.
Show a hen and chicks, then ask, "How are the chicks like the hen, and how are they different from one another?"
Play Same or Different by revealing two puppy photos, naming a trait, and having students hold up matching or different cards.
Use photos from a local farm or zoo to compare parent animals with their young and record visible similarities and differences.
