What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask focused questions about why people choose certain plants or animals as parents. They gather information from sources and explain how those choices make inherited traits more common over generations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a crop or animal example, students can identify the desired trait, selected parents, and likely results in offspring. They use evidence to explain that selection raises probability but does not guarantee the trait.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse selective breeding with genetic engineering or think breeders directly change an organism's DNA. They may treat trained behaviors as inherited or expect every offspring to show the chosen trait.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a four-generation corn color table and a farmer's seed-selection note. Ask, "What question would you ask, and how do both sources show human influence on inheritance?"

Ways to Teach It
Use allele cards to choose parent plants, build offspring for three generations, and graph how often the target trait appears.
Read two short sources on dog breeding, then write which human choices changed trait frequencies and cite one detail from each.
Play Breeder Challenge: teams select parent pairs, roll dice for offspring alleles, and score when evidence supports their choice.
