What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify characteristics passed from parents and those developed through experience or the environment. They use observations, texts, and examples to support and communicate each classification.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify examples such as eye color, scars, fur patterns, and learned tricks. They explain how each characteristic developed and support their answer with evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every physical feature is inherited and every behavior is learned. They may also think offspring are exact copies of their parents or that acquired features, such as scars, pass to offspring.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket asking students to classify eye color, a scar, a dog sitting on command, and fur color, then explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs photo and event cards, then have them build two labeled groups and attach a one-sentence evidence note to each card.

  2. Ask, “Can a physical characteristic be acquired?” Students discuss scars, suntans, and muscles developed through exercise, then write a claim with evidence.

  3. Play Trait Detective: teams draw a characteristic card, classify it, and earn a point only when their explanation names parents or experience.

  4. Compare dog coat color with learned commands, using breeder and trainer examples to explain which characteristics can pass to puppies.
