What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort plants into groups using visible features such as leaf shape, flower color, stems, or size. They explain the grouping and point to evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student sorts plant pictures by one clear feature and names that feature. The student can defend where a plant belongs using an observable detail.

Common Misconceptions

Students may group plants by personal preference instead of a shared feature. They may think there is only one correct way to sort plants or that all plants have flowers.

How to Assess It

Give students four plant pictures and ask them to make two groups. Have them complete: “I grouped these plants together because they all have _____.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs plant picture cards to sort by leaves, flowers, stems, or size, then ask them to explain one group.

  2. Show two plant groups and ask, “What feature was used, and what evidence do you see?”

  3. Play Mystery Sort by secretly choosing a plant feature while students place picture cards and guess the sorting rule.

  4. Take a schoolyard walk, sketch three plants, and group them by one visible feature observed outdoors.
