What Students Need to Do
- Students examine fossil shapes, structures, and locations. They make a claim about an organism or environment, support it with observed details, and explain the connection.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar fossil reproduction, a student can separate visible observations from inferences. The student makes a reasonable claim and supports it with two relevant details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every fossil is a bone or a complete organism. They may treat guesses as evidence or assume a fossil shows exactly when and how an organism died.
How to Assess It
- Show a fossil slab with a fish shape and fin impressions. Ask students to name the likely environment and support their claim with two visible details.

Press shells, leaves, and plastic animal tracks into clay, then trade impressions and record what each reveals about organism and habitat.
Display a shell fossil reproduction and ask, "What can we claim about where it lived, and which visible detail supports that claim?"
