What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine fossil images or models and identify visible features of plants and animals. They use those details to make and share a supported claim about life long ago.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a fossil, a student lists accurate observations and separates them from inferences. The student explains what the fossil shows about an organism and supports the explanation with visible evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all fossils are dinosaur bones or that a fossil is the complete original organism. They may assume every dead organism becomes fossilized. Some make unsupported claims about color, behavior, or habitat.

How to Assess It

Show a fossil leaf image and ask students to list two observations. Then have them write one claim about the plant and cite one visible detail as evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Press shells and leaves into clay, remove them, then record which structures the impressions preserve and which details are missing.

  2. Show a fish fossil found inland and ask, “What might this place have been like long ago, and what supports your claim?”

  3. Play Fossil Match: teams pair fossil image cards with organism cards, then earn a point by naming visible evidence.

  4. Examine photos of Georgia shark teeth and explain what they suggest about where ocean water once covered the state.
