Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students create diagrams or physical models that show an organism’s life stages in order. They use arrows and labels to show how the cycle repeats. They compare cycles and identify differences among organisms.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can build an accurate, labeled model for more than one organism. The stages are in order, the arrows show a repeating cycle, and the student can explain one difference between the cycles.
Common Misconceptions: Students may arrange stages in a straight line and leave out reproduction or the return to the starting stage. They may think all young animals look like smaller adults. They may also mix stages from different organisms.
How to Assess It: Give students mixed picture cards for a frog and a bean plant. Ask them to arrange both cycles, add arrows, and write one difference between them.

Lesson moves

Have pairs use clay and arrow cards to build butterfly and chicken life cycles, then revise any stages placed out of order.
Show frog and chicken life cycle pictures, then ask students to write how the young organisms differ from their adults.
Run a stage-card relay where teams race to arrange plant, frog, and butterfly life cycles correctly and explain each choice.
Plant bean seeds in clear cups and keep a dated drawing log from seed through sprout and young plant.
