Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify an animal, describe what it does, and tell how that action helps a plant make new plants. They use observations, pictures, or facts as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain a clear cause and effect, such as pollen sticking to a bee and reaching another flower. The student can also describe seeds being carried, eaten, dropped, or caught on fur.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think animals make seeds or pollen. They may confuse pollination with seed movement. They may also believe animals help plants on purpose rather than through normal feeding or travel.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a bird eating berries. Ask, “How could this bird help a new berry plant grow somewhere else?”

Lesson moves

Press a pom-pom bee into powdered chalk, then move it between paper flowers to model pollen transfer.
Write about one animal action that helps a plant, using the words animal, plant, and because.
Play a matching game with animal cards, plant cards, and action cards such as carrying pollen, burying seeds, or catching burrs.
Inspect socks after a schoolyard walk, then discuss how any attached seeds could reach a new growing place.
