The Standard

Plan and carry out an investigation of the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed and by recording changes over a period of time.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sprout a seed, care for the plant, and observe it on several dates. They record changes with labeled drawings, words, or measurements, then describe the growth sequence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students keep an accurate, dated record from seed through early plant growth. They identify changes such as roots, stems, and leaves, using evidence from their own observations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a seed is not living or that a plant appears fully formed overnight. They may confuse daily care actions, such as watering, with observed plant changes.

How to Assess It

Give students three plant drawings from different dates. Ask them to order the drawings and write two observations that show how the plant changed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Plant bean seeds in clear cups, label dates, and add drawings and measurements to a class growth chart every two days.

  2. Ask students to write: What changed first, what changed next, and what evidence from your plant supports your answer?

  3. Play a sequencing game where pairs arrange seed, root, stem, and leaf cards, then explain the order to another pair.

  4. Read a seed packet and use its sprouting estimate to mark expected changes on a classroom calendar.
