What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver presentations for a specific audience and goal. They adjust word choice, details, tone, visuals, organization, and speaking style to fit the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select details, words, examples, visuals, and delivery methods that fit a named audience and purpose. They can explain how their choices help inform, persuade, or entertain that audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think changing for an audience means changing the facts. They may use the same tone, details, visuals, and vocabulary for every audience or read directly from slides.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to give a 60-second talk about a new school rule for either sixth graders or the principal. They must identify two choices made for that audience.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups one topic and audience cards, then have them build a three-slide presentation using details and visuals suited to their assigned audience.
Ask students to write how a presentation about phone rules should change for parents, classmates, and the school board.
Play Audience Switch, where students begin a short speech, draw a new audience card, and immediately adjust their language and tone.
Have students create a one-minute announcement persuading students to attend a real school event, using specific details that appeal to their grade level.
