What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students present ideas and information in a clear, logical order. They choose relevant details, explain evidence, and adjust their words, volume, and pace for the audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students organize a presentation with a clear opening, focused points, relevant evidence, and a brief closing. They speak at an understandable pace and volume, using precise language for their audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read slides word for word, speak too softly, or rush through key points. They may include unrelated details or assume the audience already knows the context.
How to Assess It
- Give students one minute to explain a class text’s main idea and two supporting details. Check organization, volume, pace, and clear references to the text.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed-up presentation cards, then have them arrange the opening, evidence, explanation, and closing before presenting.
Ask students to explain which speaker choices make an idea easy to follow, using examples from two short recorded presentations.
Play a sixty-second summary game where students draw a topic card and present it without filler words or unrelated details.
Have students record a clear school announcement about an upcoming event, including the purpose, date, location, and needed actions.
