What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students present a clear main idea and support it with relevant details from information or a text. They organize their points and use speech that listeners can follow.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students state a focused main idea, organize supporting details logically, and use accurate evidence from a source. They speak at an understandable pace and volume, using notes without reading a script.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read slides word for word, speak too softly, or add details that distract from the main point. Some assume eye contact and organization matter more than accurate evidence, rather than using both together.

How to Assess It

Give students 60 seconds to explain a familiar class text using one main idea and two supporting details. Check clarity, organization, volume, and accuracy.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three fact cards and two minutes to arrange them into a clear opening, supporting points, and closing before presenting.

  2. Ask students to explain which makes a presentation easier to follow, strong organization, clear speech, or relevant evidence, and defend their choice.

  3. Play Presentation Relay, where each student adds one relevant sentence while keeping the group explanation focused and logically ordered.

  4. Have students give a one-minute school announcement about an upcoming event, including the purpose, key details, and a clear call to action.
