What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share an idea, fact, or short text so others can understand them. They use clear words, an audible voice, and details that fit the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names the topic, shares ideas in a sensible order, and includes enough detail for listeners. The student speaks clearly and answers a simple follow-up question.
Common Misconceptions
- Some children think speaking loudly always means speaking clearly. They may mumble, face away, skip needed details, or use words like “it” without naming the object.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture and ask, “Tell the class what is happening and give two details.” Check for an audible voice, clear words, and relevant details.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three picture cards to arrange, then have them present the events in order to a small group.
Ask partners, “What is your favorite classroom activity, and why?” Listeners repeat one detail they heard.
Play Mystery Object, where students give three clear clues about a classroom item while classmates guess.
Have each student give a short classroom announcement about the lunch menu, weather, or daily schedule.
