What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize a focused message for a specific audience and purpose. They choose relevant evidence, explain it, and use effective pacing, volume, language, and visuals.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a focused presentation with a logical sequence, specific evidence, and enough explanation for the audience to follow. The student uses an appropriate tone, steady pace, audible voice, and readable visuals.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read slides or notes word for word instead of explaining their thinking. They may add too many details, use weak evidence, speak too quickly, or ignore the audience.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to give a 60-second explanation of a class text using one claim and one supporting detail. Check organization, explanation, delivery, and audience awareness.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a disorganized set of presentation note cards, then have them arrange the cards and deliver a two-minute version.

  2. Ask students to write which speaking choice most affects credibility, then defend their answer with an example from a recent presentation.

  3. Play Presentation Repair, where students revise weak openings, crowded slides, vague evidence, and abrupt conclusions for points.

  4. Have students record a two-minute proposal for a school improvement, aimed at the principal and supported with one specific fact.
