What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize and present an idea, information, or a text so listeners can follow it. They use clear words, relevant details, suitable volume, and a steady pace.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students present a focused idea with relevant facts, examples, or details. They speak at an understandable pace and volume, use clear sentences, and refer to notes without reading them word for word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read every word from notes, speak too softly, or rush through the presentation. They may list facts without a clear main idea or supporting details.
How to Assess It
- Give students three minutes to prepare a 30-second talk explaining a favorite book. Check for a clear main idea, two details, audible speech, and complete sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student a classroom object and three minutes to prepare a one-minute presentation describing its features and possible uses.
Ask students to write three speaker tips, then discuss which tip most helps an audience understand a presentation.
Play Presentation Relay, where students explain a topic for 20 seconds before a partner continues using one new supporting detail.
Have students give a morning announcement about a school event, including its purpose, date, location, and one reason to attend.
