What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share an idea, fact, or short text aloud so others can understand it. They speak clearly, organize their thoughts, and include useful details for their listeners.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student presents one main idea with details in an order listeners can follow. The student uses an audible voice, understandable words, and answers a simple question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think speaking loudly is the same as speaking clearly. They may jump between ideas, leave out needed details, or read without looking at listeners.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a familiar picture and ask, “Tell the class what is happening and include two details.” Check for clear volume, order, and details.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three picture cards to arrange, then present the pictured event in order to a partner.
Ask, “What makes a speaker easy to understand?” Record student ideas, then choose three class presentation rules.
Play Speaker Coach, where partners present one fact and give feedback on volume, pace, and clear details.
Have students give a one-minute classroom weather report using an observation, a temperature card, and clothing advice.
