What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize a spoken presentation around a clear main point, logical sequence, and relevant evidence. They use precise language, audible delivery, and useful visuals for a specific audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain a text or topic without losing the main point. The presentation uses accurate details, clear transitions, steady pacing, and direct responses to audience questions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read slides word for word, include too many details, or speak too softly. They may list evidence without explaining how it supports the main idea.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give a 60-second presentation answering, “How does one detail shape the meaning of the class text?” Listeners mark claim, evidence, and explanation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs index cards labeled opening, claim, evidence, explanation, and conclusion, then have them arrange and deliver a one-minute presentation.
Ask students to write: “Which speaking choice most helps an audience understand a difficult idea, and why?” Then discuss their answers.
Run a 60-second clarity challenge where students draw familiar topics and peers tally one main point, one detail, and one transition.
Have students record a public service announcement for a school issue, using one claim, two facts, and a clear call to action.
