What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver presentations for a clear audience and purpose. They select words, examples, visuals, and speaking choices that fit the listeners and the goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students adjust vocabulary, examples, tone, volume, pace, and visuals for a named audience. They can explain how their choices help them inform, persuade, or entertain that audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give the same words, tone, and details to every audience. They may think louder speech or extra facts always make a presentation better, even when those choices do not fit the purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Prepare two 20-second announcements about a class book drive, one for first graders and one for the principal. Change at least two presentation choices.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups audience and purpose cards, then have them present the same playground rule using matching words, tone, and visuals.
Ask students to write how a weather report should change when presented to kindergarteners, families, or emergency workers.
Play Audience Switch, where speakers explain a topic, draw a new audience card, and immediately adjust their language and delivery.
Have students create two school lunch announcements, one to inform classmates and one to persuade the principal to add a menu item.
