What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose content, language, tone, evidence, and visuals that fit the people listening and the goal. They adjust volume, pace, eye contact, and responses to questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make clear choices about details, wording, visuals, and delivery for a named audience. The presentation stays focused on its purpose, and the student can explain why those choices fit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use the same vocabulary and tone for classmates, teachers, and community members. They may add crowded slides or flashy effects that distract from the message. Some focus on eye contact and volume but ignore the audience’s needs.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give a 45-second proposal asking the principal to add recycling bins. After presenting, students name two choices they made for that audience.

Ways to Teach It
Draw audience and purpose cards, then give a one-minute talk on school lunch using matching tone, evidence, and delivery.
Compare two sample openings for the same topic, then write which audience each fits and cite three clues.
Play Audience Switch: speakers begin a pitch, then revise it midway when classmates reveal a new audience card.
Create a two-minute proposal for a real school improvement and present it to the staff member who could act on it.
