What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make deliberate choices about how they sound and move while speaking. They match those choices to the listeners, goal, and situation, then adjust when listeners seem confused or disengaged.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can deliver the same message differently for classmates, a principal, or a community audience. Voice, timing, eye contact, facial expression, posture, and movement support the message without becoming distracting.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may equate strong delivery with speaking loudly or quickly. They may use constant gestures, avoid eye contact, or adopt a dramatic voice that conflicts with the message. Some prepare words carefully but leave delivery choices to chance.
How to Assess It
- Have each student deliver a 30-second schedule change announcement twice, once to friends and once to families, then name two delivery changes.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs audience and purpose cards, then have each student deliver one sentence using voice and movement that fit both cards.
Ask students: How should a speaker announce a canceled event to teammates versus families, and which delivery choices should change?
Play Delivery Match: students draw emotion, audience, and purpose cards, perform a line, and classmates identify the cards from delivery clues.
Watch a school board clip and a sports interview, then chart how each speaker's voice, timing, eye contact, and gestures serve listeners.
