What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students shape how they speak and move based on who is listening and why they are presenting. They make deliberate choices about voice, timing, eye contact, posture, facial expression, and gestures.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students adjust their voice, timing, facial expression, posture, and movement to fit a specific setting. Their choices seem natural, support the message, and keep listeners focused.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think strong delivery means speaking loudly, quickly, or dramatically at all times. They may use random hand movements, keep one pace throughout, or change their voice without considering listeners and purpose.

How to Assess It

Ask students to deliver the same 30-second announcement to a close friend and then to the school board. They must explain two delivery choices they changed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs audience and purpose cards, then have them present one sentence using delivery choices that match both cards.

  2. Show two short speech clips and ask, "Which delivery choices fit the audience, and which choices distract from the message?"

  3. Play Delivery Switch by calling out pace, mood, or audience changes while students read the same paragraph aloud.

  4. Have students record a one-minute job interview response, then revise their voice, posture, eye contact, and gestures for a professional audience.
