What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students change how they speak and move based on who is listening and why they are presenting. They use vocal expression, speed, pauses, eye contact, facial expressions, and gestures on purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make deliberate delivery choices that fit their message and listeners. They can explain why they slowed down, changed vocal expression, paused, made eye contact, or used a gesture.

Common Misconceptions

Students may speak louder when they mean to sound more expressive. They may rush, use repeated gestures, or avoid eye contact without considering how those choices affect listeners.

How to Assess It

Give students a 30-second school announcement to present twice, once to classmates and once to families. Check for clear changes in voice, speed, expression, and movement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students mark pauses, emphasis, facial expressions, and gestures on a printed speech, then rehearse it with a partner.

  2. Ask students to explain how they would present the same message differently to kindergarteners, classmates, and the school board.

  3. Play Delivery Switch, where students draw audience and purpose cards, then present one sentence using matching voice, speed, and gestures.

  4. Students record a short weather report or public service announcement, then review whether their delivery fits the intended viewers.
