What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students change how they speak and move based on who is listening and why they are speaking. They use a fitting voice, speaking speed, facial expression, eye contact, and hand movements.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can tell a lively story with expression, then give directions slowly and clearly. The student uses facial expressions and gestures that support the message without distracting listeners.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think good presenting means speaking loudly all the time. They may rush, use the same voice for every listener, or add gestures that do not match their words. Some may look down and speak too softly to be understood.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to say, “The bus is coming,” first as exciting news to a friend, then as a safety warning to a younger child. Check for changes in voice, speed, facial expression, and gestures.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a toy microphone and audience cards, then have them announce a lost lunchbox to a friend, teacher, or school group.

  2. Ask, “How would your voice and face change when sharing good news, giving a warning, or asking for help?”

  3. Play Audience Switch: students repeat one sentence for a baby, friend, teacher, and large crowd, changing delivery each round.

  4. Have students record a short morning announcement, then review whether their voice, speed, and gestures fit the school audience.
