What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students shape how they speak and move to fit their goal and listeners. They choose a suitable volume, speed, expression, posture, eye contact, and gestures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can speak differently for a serious report, a friendly story, and a persuasive speech. Their volume, speed, facial expressions, posture, and hand movements fit the listeners and message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think speaking louder always makes a presentation better. They may change their voice or gestures so much that the message feels distracting or unnatural.
How to Assess It
- Have each student give a 30-second announcement for a chosen audience, such as kindergarteners or the principal. Check for fitting voice speed, expression, and gestures.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs audience and purpose cards, then have them present the same school announcement using fitting voices, posture, facial expressions, and gestures.
Ask students to explain how they would present a storm warning differently to classmates, young children, and city leaders.
Play Presentation Coach, where students deliver one sentence and partners name one effective choice and suggest one specific adjustment.
Watch a short weather report and identify how the speaker uses pauses, facial expressions, posture, and hand movements to guide viewers.
