What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students speak with listeners before, during, or after a presentation. They answer questions directly and ask useful follow-up questions to clarify ideas or audience concerns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students answer questions clearly, stay on topic, and support responses with details or evidence. They ask focused questions to clarify audience views and adjust their explanation when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give vague answers, repeat prepared points, or become defensive when challenged. They may ask yes-or-no questions that do not help them understand the audience.
How to Assess It
- After a 60-second talk, have each student answer one audience question and ask one follow-up question. Check that both responses are relevant and specific.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs question cards to sort into clarify, challenge, or extend, then have them rehearse a response to one card from each group.
Write a response to this prompt: How can a presenter disagree with an audience member while keeping the exchange respectful and useful?
Run a hot-seat game where students give 30-second talks, then earn points for direct answers and purposeful follow-up questions.
Stage a school board press conference where students present a proposed school change and respond to questions from classmates playing families, staff, and students.
