What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students speak with an audience rather than only delivering prepared remarks. They ask useful questions, listen to audience questions, and give clear, relevant answers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students ask relevant questions that invite audience input or clarify understanding. They listen closely, answer directly with evidence or examples, and handle follow-up questions calmly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat questions as attacks or answer before hearing the full question. They may give vague replies, ignore follow-up questions, or ask questions unrelated to the presentation.

How to Assess It

After a two-minute presentation, have each student answer one audience question and ask one question that checks the audience’s understanding. Listen for relevance, clarity, and direct engagement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Run a gallery walk where students post one question on each presentation, then presenters choose two questions and respond aloud.

  2. Use the prompt, “What makes an audience question helpful rather than distracting?” and require students to support their answer with an example.

  3. Play Question Ladder, where teams earn points by asking a relevant question, answering clearly, and adding a useful follow-up.

  4. Simulate a town council meeting where students present a proposal and respond to questions from classmates acting as residents and officials.
