What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pause during or after a presentation to invite audience questions. They give clear answers and ask follow-up questions when they need more information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student listens without interrupting, answers the question asked, and adds a useful detail or example. The student asks for clarification when a question is unclear and responds respectfully.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask questions that are unrelated or already answered. Presenters may interrupt, give one-word answers, repeat the whole presentation, or respond without addressing the question.
How to Assess It
- After a 60-second show-and-tell, have a partner ask one question. Check whether the presenter listens, answers directly, and asks for clarification if needed.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student an object to present, then have audience members write and ask one relevant question about it.
Use the prompt, "What makes a question helpful to a speaker?" and build a class list from student responses.
Play Question Toss, where students catch a ball, ask the speaker a related question, then listen for a complete answer.
Role-play a museum guide answering visitor questions about a displayed classroom artifact, photo, or student-made model.
