What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take turns speaking and listening during a presentation or conversation. They ask questions that fit the topic and give answers that make sense to listeners.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student listens to a classmate, waits for a turn, and asks a question connected to what was shared. The student answers questions clearly and adds a helpful detail.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may interrupt, make an unrelated comment, or repeat a fact instead of asking a question. They may give one-word answers that do not help the listener understand.
How to Assess It
- Have each student share a picture with a partner, ask one related question, and answer the partner’s question with one detail. Check for turn-taking and relevance.

Ways to Teach It
Place a familiar object in a mystery bag; one child describes it, classmates ask clue questions, and the presenter answers without revealing it.
After a classmate shares a drawing, ask, “What question would help us understand it better?” then collect and answer three examples.
Play Question Toss: a child catches a soft ball, asks an on-topic question, then tosses it to the classmate who answers.
Students interview the school librarian about one job task, then report back and answer two classmates’ questions.
