What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students involve an audience by asking purposeful questions during or after a presentation. They answer audience questions clearly and adjust their response based on what listeners say.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students ask clear questions that invite useful audience responses. They listen closely, answer with relevant details, and ask follow-up questions when clarification is needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat audience questions as a final step instead of part of the presentation. They may ask yes-or-no questions, repeat prepared points, or give vague answers without evidence.
How to Assess It
- Have each student give a one-minute explanation, ask the audience one open-ended question, and answer one follow-up question with a specific detail.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs topic cards and sticky notes, then have each speaker ask, answer, and post one follow-up question during a two-minute presentation.
Write a response to this prompt: How can a speaker turn a difficult audience question into a useful conversation?
Play Question Ladder, where students earn points by moving from a factual question to a clarifying question and then a probing question.
Hold a mock school board meeting where presenters propose a campus change and respond to questions from students playing parents, teachers, and administrators.
