What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely during presentations and respond to audience concerns with clear, relevant answers. They also pose focused questions that clarify ideas, test claims, or continue the exchange.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student responds directly, adds relevant evidence, and checks whether the answer addressed the question. The student also asks focused follow-ups that clarify concerns or extend the exchange.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat audience questions as interruptions or give answers that wander from the point. They may ask vague follow-ups, become defensive, or guess instead of admitting uncertainty.

How to Assess It

After a two-minute talk, have each student answer one audience question, then ask a follow-up that clarifies the audience member’s thinking. Check for relevance, clarity, and respectful tone.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups question cards labeled clarify, challenge, and extend, then have presenters draw and respond to one card after a short talk.

  2. Use the prompt, “How can a presenter disagree with an audience member while keeping the exchange productive?” and discuss sample responses.

  3. Play Question Relay, where each student answers one question and asks a connected follow-up before passing the turn.

  4. Simulate a workplace proposal meeting, with students pitching a schedule change and fielding questions from classmates acting as managers and employees.
