What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students respond to audience questions with clear, relevant answers and supporting details. They ask follow-up questions that clarify a comment, probe an idea, or invite another perspective. They listen closely and adjust their responses as the exchange develops.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students answer questions directly, explain their thinking, and cite a relevant example or detail. They ask focused follow-up questions based on what others say. They maintain a respectful exchange without drifting off topic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the exchange like a quiz and give one-word answers. They may ask unrelated questions, repeat what was already said, or ignore details in the speaker's response. Some students become defensive instead of asking for clarification.

How to Assess It

After a one-minute presentation, have each student answer one audience question, then ask a follow-up that builds on the exchange. Check relevance, clarity, and supporting details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs topic cards; one student presents for 60 seconds, while the partner draws question stems and leads a two-minute exchange.

  2. Write three questions for a classmate's claim, then discuss which question would produce the most useful answer and why.

  3. Play Question Ladder: teams earn points for each relevant follow-up that uses a detail from the speaker's previous answer.

  4. Simulate a school club funding pitch, with presenters answering student council questions and asking what evidence would strengthen their proposal.
