What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and give short presentations for a clear audience and purpose. They choose suitable words, details, voice, and visuals to inform, explain, or persuade.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can adjust their words, volume, details, and visuals for a named audience and goal. They can explain why a presentation choice helps listeners understand or respond.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a strong presentation only means speaking loudly or reading every word from a page. They may use the same words, details, and tone for every audience or confuse informing with persuading.
How to Assess It
- Give each student an audience and purpose, such as teaching first graders how to care for a class pet. Ask for a 30-second opening that fits both.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs audience and purpose cards, then have them deliver a 30-second presentation using one picture or classroom object.
Ask students to write two openings about the same book, one for kindergarten students and one for the principal, then compare their choices.
Play Audience Switch, where students repeat a short message after drawing a new audience card and changing words, tone, or details.
Have students create and deliver a morning announcement that informs classmates about a school event or persuades them to join an activity.
