What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share an idea, information, or a short text in an order listeners can follow. They use a clear voice, relevant details, and words suited to their audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give a brief presentation with a clear beginning, ordered points, and an ending. Listeners can hear, understand, and identify the main idea and supporting details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may speak too softly, list details in random order, or leave out the main point. They may read every word, include unrelated facts, or use the same wording for every audience.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to explain how to borrow a library book to a new classmate. Check for logical order, an audible voice, and two relevant details.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three picture cards to sequence, then have them present the event using the cards as visual cues.
Ask, “How would you explain recess rules to a new student?” Students draft three points, then share with a partner.
Play Mystery Object: students describe a classroom item with three precise clues while classmates identify it.
Have students deliver a 30-second class announcement about tomorrow’s schedule, including key information and an appropriate closing.
