What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize ideas and details before speaking to a group. They present with clear language, suitable volume and pace, and support from notes, examples, or visuals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give an organized presentation with a clear main idea, relevant details, and a closing statement. They use an audible voice, steady pace, eye contact, and helpful visuals or notes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read directly from notes, speak too softly, or rush through key points. They may list facts without explaining how those facts support the main idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students one minute to explain a familiar topic using a main idea and two supporting details. Check organization, volume, pace, and eye contact.

Ask students to write three ways a speaker can help an audience follow and understand a presentation.
Play Presentation Coach, where partners give a 30-second talk and earn points for volume, pace, eye contact, and clear details.
Have students present a one-minute school announcement about an upcoming event, including the purpose, date, location, and needed materials.
