What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a form, such as a story, poster, directions, or short talk, based on the audience and goal. They combine words, speech, drawings, or other visuals to make the message clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a fitting format and combine words, speech, or visuals to communicate clearly. They can explain how their choices help a particular audience understand the message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a favorite format without considering the audience or goal. They may add unrelated pictures or assume every audience has the same background knowledge.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: “Teach kindergarteners how to care for a class pet. Choose a format and two ways to share the information. Explain your choices.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a toy and have them make picture-and-word directions for kindergarteners to explain how to use it safely.
Ask: Would a comic, letter, or speech best persuade the principal to add recess time, and why?
Play Audience Match: students match purpose cards with audience, genre, and mode cards, then defend one completed set.
Have students create a lunchroom reminder using a short slogan, clear drawing, and spoken announcement for classmates.
