What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a fitting form, such as a report, story, or argument, for a clear purpose and audience. They combine speech with visuals, text, audio, or demonstration so each part helps communicate the message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a clear presentation using a fitting genre and at least two connected modes. Their tone, details, visuals, and delivery suit the audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add pictures, music, or text that distract from the main message. They may choose a favorite format without considering the audience, or repeat the same information in every mode.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plan a one-minute presentation that persuades classmates to save water. Name the genre, two modes, and what each mode adds.

Compare a poster and a short speech about recycling, then write which better fits second graders and why.
Play Audience Swap by drawing purpose and audience cards, then adapting the same message into a report, story, or argument.
Redesign a school event announcement for students and families, choosing different words, visuals, and formats for each audience.
