What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and combine ways to share an idea, such as speaking, drawing, writing, acting, or using a simple chart. Their choices fit who will listen and whether they are explaining, informing, entertaining, or asking.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a message and an audience, a student selects useful formats and explains the choice. The student might use a labeled picture and spoken directions for classmates, but a short note and drawing for families.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same format for every message or choose only what they enjoy. They may add pictures, movement, or sound that distract rather than clarify. Some confuse the audience with the topic and do not adjust words or details for the listener.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Tell the principal how to care for the class plant. Choose two options, spoken directions, a labeled drawing, a song, or a story, then explain why.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a toy and audience cards, then have them make a labeled picture and a 20-second talk suited to the named audience.

  2. Ask students to write how they would explain a lost tooth to a kindergartner and to a dentist, then compare choices.

  3. Play Audience Match: students draw purpose and audience cards, choose from format cards, and justify their match in one sentence.

  4. Have students create a morning announcement about returning library books, pairing a spoken reminder with a simple sign for the hallway.
