What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and combine spoken, written, visual, and digital elements for a clear goal and audience. They use forms such as explanation, narrative, or argument so the parts work together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a clear presentation in which words, visuals, audio, or digital features support one another. They can explain why each choice fits the intended audience and goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add images or music that do not support the message. They may repeat the same information in every format or choose formats based only on personal preference.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plan a presentation convincing classmates to join a school club. Name two formats and one genre you would combine, then explain why each fits the audience.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a short article, chart paper, and markers; have them turn it into a two-minute briefing with one visual and one quotation.
Write which mix of formats would best explain a new lunch policy to students, families, and staff, then justify how your choices change.
Play Audience Swap: teams draw purpose and audience cards, then revise a presentation plan in three minutes to match both.
Create a school event campaign using a spoken announcement, flyer, and social post, with each piece serving a different audience need.
