What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and combine speech, writing, visuals, audio, or video to fit a specific goal and audience. They use a suitable genre, such as argument, narrative, or explanation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build a presentation that combines speech, text, visuals, or audio for a clear reason. The student selects argument, narrative, or explanation based on the goal and audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images, audio, or video only for decoration. They may choose a genre they enjoy without considering the audience. They may also repeat the same information across every mode instead of making each mode add meaning.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Create a three-slide plan persuading seventh graders to join a school club. Include spoken words, one visual or data display, and a brief reason for each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed claims, charts, photos, and quotes to arrange into a two-minute presentation for a chosen audience.

  2. Ask students to explain which modes they would use to warn children, inform parents, and persuade the principal about the same issue.

  3. Play Audience Match by having teams pair presentation cards with audience cards and defend each match in one sentence.

  4. Have students create a public service announcement that combines a spoken message, a statistic, and an image for a local concern.
